The core's job is to affect waterproof capabilities, and a typical one is a solid vinyl. If you want a higher level of protection, ask about WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite). Neither will peel or ripple no matter how much water and moisture it is exposed to or for how long. While both have the same waterproof characteristics, SPC is more rigid and slightly more resistant to dents. Because WPC is more flexible, there is more cushioning underfoot, as well as deeper embossing.
Durability is affected by the wear layer, which protects the floor from scratches and scuffs. The wear layer even helps out with waterproofing, because it keeps spills at the top. This is where it can get a little confusing: The overall thickness of the flooring should be 8-mm, 9-mm, or even higher (up to 12-mm if you want that authentic hardwood feeling.) The wear layer, however, is measured in mils and that should be at least 20-mils. Don’t just ask about overall thickness, also ask about the wear layer.
